Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Lake Charles LA
638pm CDT Wednesday August 5 2026

(This afternoon through next Tuesday) Issued at 1122am CDT Wednesday August 5 2026

Typical summer pattern looks to continue through our day-to-day forecast with little change expected. Upper level ridging is currently centered over New Mexico and a weak upper level trough situated in the eastern Gulf is leading to very weak upper level flow over our area. Diurnally driven showers will persist daily over sections of our area. Weak upper level flow will lead to slow moving storms, but the average PWAT (Precipitable Water) values dampen the chances for flooding rainfall.

A surface high pressure is situated over the eastern Gulf is bringing light southerly winds over our area. Currently sporadic storms have began to initiate over much of the region. Outflow boundaries and cloud shading will likely keep heat indices from reaching the values required for a heat advisory. Modest DCAPE values suggest a small chance for localized strong downdrafts in convection through this afternoon.
